The Media Commons editing stations now have an automated backup and restore tool, right on the desktop.

You can use this app to simply and easily save your iMovie projects to the MC Storage Space server when you finish working for the day – and copy them back to the computer when you are ready to edit again. This tutorial will show you how to both backup and restore your iMovie project using the new MC iMovie Backup App.

Note: If you have not set up MC Storage Space you will need to do so before backing up your iMovie project. The iMovie Backup App has an MC Storage button at the bottom, which will take you right to the MC Storage set up page.

For more information on how to sign up for MC Storage, please see the tutorial for How to Set Up MC Storage Space.

Backing Up Your Project

Begin by clicking on the MC iMovie Backup application, located on the desktop.

When the application opens, it will ask you what you would like to do. Select the big blue Backup button.

The window will expand, and you will see all of your personal MC Storage Space folders. The application will ask you to choose a folder that you wish to direct the backup to, so go ahead and select the appropriate folder. Then, click OK.

Note: If you have already backed up your iMovie project to the same MC Storage folder, the app will tell you that you are about to overwrite and replace the older version of your project. As long as you are backing up the newest version of your iMovie project, select OK to overwrite the old version.

Your iMovie project will start backing up to the folder you selected, and the app will show you the estimated time remaining at the bottom. Depending on how large your project is, this could take some time.

When the process is finished, a notification will pop up letting you know that your video has been saved.

Restoring Your iMovie Project

Begin by clicking on the MC iMovie Backup application, located on the desktop.

When the application opens, it will ask you what you would like to do. Select the big green Restore button.

The window will expand, and you will see all of your personal MC Storage Space folders. Select the folder that contains the backup that you wish to restore. Then, click OK.

Note: Since iMovie libraries exist on all Media Commons editing stations, the app will tell you that you are about to overwrite an existing file. Simply select OK to restore your project to your editing station.

Your iMovie project will start restoring to the iMac from the folder you selected, and the app will show you the estimated time remaining at the bottom. Depending on how large your project is, this could take some time.

When the process is complete, a notification will pop-up to let you know that you have restored your project.

That’s it! Your project should now be restored to your iMac. When you open iMovie, everything should be right where you left it, and you can continue editing your project.
